The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government. The association has made similar warning last year over unresolved issues and this is beginning to affect the country’s university system.
ASUU made the decision following a National Executive Council meeting held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.
The ASUU president, Prof. Chris Piwuna made this known in a copy of strike action he signed and made available to the public.
The warning calls for government action on key demands which include renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable university funding, revitalisation of institutions, addressing staff welfare and salary concerns, and resolving outstanding issues like promotion arrears and third-party deductions.
Piwuna stated that failure to address these within 14 days may lead to a two-week warning strike and potentially a total and indefinite strike. He added that ASUU’s core demands remain largely unchanged: renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, adequate revitalisation funds for universities, settlement of outstanding salary arrears, and sustainable funding mechanisms.
