Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak has met with a young fan after a video from the US Open went viral showing a man snatching a cap meant for the boy.
Majchrzak shared clips on Instagram on Saturday, showing him greeting two boys and handing out gifts, including a cap similar to the one seen in the viral moment.
“Today after warm up, I had a nice meeting,” Majchrzak wrote on Instagram. “Do you recognise [the cap]?”
The original video, widely circulated online and reported to be from Majchrzak’s second-round match at Flushing Meadows, showed the 29-year-old handing his cap to a child in the stands. Before the boy could take it, a man standing beside him grabbed the hat. The boy was then seen pleading for it back.
The footage sparked outrage on social media, with many users criticizing the man, identified by several outlets as Piotr Szczerek, a Polish CEO of a paving company. BBC News reported it had reached out to Mr. Szczerek for comment.
Majchrzak later posted another photo, smiling next to the young fan who was finally wearing the cap. “Hello World, together with Brock we wish you a great day!” he captioned the post.
Currently ranked No. 76 in the world, Majchrzak delivered one of the US Open’s most dramatic performances last week, coming back from two sets down to defeat Russian ninth seed Karen Khachanov in the second round. However, his tournament ended in disappointment when he was forced to retire with an intercostal muscle injury in the first set of his third-round match against Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi on Saturday.
The viral clip and Majchrzak’s gesture have since become one of the most talked-about off-court moments at this year’s US Open in New York.
