The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised fresh alarm after vandals once again destroyed the 33KV electricity supply line powering the Rigasa railway station and its adjoining railway village in Kaduna State. The incident occurred barely 60 days after the line was repaired, NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said on Sunday. The latest act of sabotage has plunged the entire area back into darkness after residents only recently emerged from a two-year blackout.
According to Opeifa, NRC personnel discovered the damage in the early hours of Friday, confirming that critical components of the power line had been removed by criminal elements. He noted that the repeated vandalism poses severe risks to railway operations, passenger safety and community livelihoods. The Rigasa station, a major hub on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, has experienced recurring disruptions due to attacks on essential infrastructure.
Condemning the surge in railway vandalism nationwide, the managing director urged security agencies in Kaduna to intensify surveillance efforts and track down those responsible. With railway infrastructure increasingly targeted across the country, can security interventions effectively curb these attacks and safeguard critical national assets?
