Activist Martin “VeryDarkMan” Otse on Sunday led a candlelight procession in Awka, Anambra State, in honour of the late Fish Magnet CEO, Ifesinachi Onyekere, who was killed by his abductors. The march began at Aroma Junction, with participants dressed in black and escorted by police officers, despite a formal warning from the state police against holding the event. VDM had earlier announced his arrival in Anambra for the procession, joining other Nigerians in demanding swift justice for the slain businessman.
The Anambra State Police Command had cautioned VDM against actions capable of inciting tension, stressing that the victim’s family had distanced themselves from any memorial gathering in his name. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga reiterated that the state remains one of the most peaceful in the region and warned that no individual, regardless of social status, would be allowed to disrupt public peace. Authorities also urged organisers to respect the family’s privacy and trust law enforcement to apprehend the culprits.
Security operatives have intensified efforts to track down the gunmen responsible for Mr Onyekere’s abduction and killing. The Commissioner of Police assured residents and the bereaved family that those responsible would be arrested and prosecuted. As of press time, the candlelight procession was still ongoing.
