Following a tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa State that claimed over 100 lives, Vice President Kashim Shettima has pledged immediate federal government intervention and called for a review of fuel transportation safety protocols across Nigeria.
In a condolence message, delivered on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Shettima expressed deep sorrow for the families affected by the disaster. He prayed for strength for those mourning their loved ones, stating, “My heart aches for those who have had their families torn apart by this disaster.”
Shettima described the incident, which took place in the Majiya community, as a national tragedy that has left the entire country in grief. He assured the people of Jigawa that the federal government stands by them, with necessary resources being mobilized to support the injured and assist affected families.
The Vice President has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deploy personnel and resources to Jigawa State to provide immediate relief. He also emphasized the need to reflect on safety measures to prevent future tragedies, stressing, “Every life is precious, and we must do all we can to protect our citizens.”
Shettima praised the dedication of first responders and medical personnel, acknowledging their tireless efforts as a testament to the nation’s resilience.
The Vice President’s response comes shortly after he inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC), where he urged members to adopt global best practices in reducing road accidents. He emphasized the critical role of road safety, noting that it is not just a policy issue, but a fundamental aspect of national well-being.
