Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood that has struck Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, leaving many residents displaced and their livelihoods destroyed. In a heartfelt message titled *”Rising Stronger Together,”* Shettima reassured the affected families that the government is committed to providing immediate relief and long-term solutions to the disaster.

The flood, which began over the weekend, intensified due to excess water from the Alau Dam after the collapse of its spillways. This unleashed a surge of water, leading to the worst flooding Maiduguri has experienced in over 30 years. “Our grief is shared, but so is our resolve to offer support and comfort as you begin to recover from this disaster,” Shettima stated.

Despite the government’s proactive 2024 Flood Outlook measures, the flood’s scale exceeded predictions, forcing evacuation and resettlement operations. “The severity of this flood has far exceeded our estimates,” Shettima admitted, but he assured the public that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Borno State Government, remains focused on mobilising all resources to ensure the safety and recovery of the affected communities.

Acknowledging the impact of climate change, Shettima emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to address Nigeria’s vulnerability to flood disasters, noting previous floods in 2012, 2018, and 2022. President Bola Tinubu has committed to prioritizing flood mitigation and recovery efforts, ensuring that no corner of the affected areas is overlooked.

Shettima praised the resilience of the people of Maiduguri and Governor Babagana Zulum’s quick response, reaffirming that, with unity and compassion, the region will recover stronger.
