Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised Nigerian journalists as the nation’s frontline defence against authoritarian rule, stressing that press freedom remains a non-negotiable pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at the 2025 IPI Nigeria Conference and AGM in Abuja, themed “Addressing Media Repression and Safeguarding Democratic Accountability in Nigeria,” VP Shettima highlighted the media’s role in correcting misinformation, holding power to account, and stabilizing the nation during tense moments.

“We owe you a space of practice devoid of harassment, intimidation, or fear. That much is non-negotiable. As a government, we must create an environment where truth can thrive without obstruction,” he said.

He added that no dictator has ever succeeded in suppressing Nigeria’s media permanently, underscoring the press’s vigilance as essential for democracy.
