
In a recent address during the 144th National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima urged a unified effort among government officials and development partners to address poverty and improve Nigerians’ quality of life.
Shettima emphasized the need for collaboration across all levels of government and with key partners like Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote, who have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development. He praised their ongoing investments in health, nutrition, agriculture, and education.

Acknowledging the challenges inherited by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Shettima stressed the importance of immediate and impactful measures alongside long-term strategies. He called for sustainable systems to empower citizens and improve food security, highlighting reforms in agriculture and nutrition.

The NEC meeting also addressed several critical issues:
– Flooding: The council approved the implementation of a comprehensive roadmap for managing floods, erosion, drought, and desertification, including the creation of the National Flood, Erosion, Drought, and Desertification Management Council.
– State Police: A deadline was set for states to submit their memorandums on the establishment of state police.
– Nutrition: The council prioritized nutrition interventions and supported the N-774 program to combat malnutrition.
– Polio: A new committee was formed to tackle vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks in affected states.
The Vice President concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating an environment where every Nigerian has the opportunity to thrive.
