At the direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for the United States, where he will represent Nigeria at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The high-level event, which draws global leaders, will take place in New York City from September 24 to September 28, 2024.
Vice President Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation following President Tinubu’s directive, as the president focuses on managing critical domestic concerns, including the recent flood disasters affecting parts of the country.
During the Assembly, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, highlighting key issues such as sustainable development, peace, and climate action. He will also participate in key meetings and bilateral engagements with world leaders.
This year’s General Debate carries the theme, “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.” Key topics of discussion will likely include climate change, economic inequality, and global security.
Vice President Shettima’s participation underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to engage with international partners on critical global issues, from peace and security to sustainable development goals (SDGs).
