In light of the D’Tigress’s success at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Rena Wakama, the head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, has been awarded the best coach of the competition.
The men’s division champion United States of America defeated France to win their eighth consecutive medal, and the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) made this news.
Reaching the quarterfinals of the competition, the 32-year-old led D’Tigress to their most remarkable performance by an African team in the history of the Olympic Basketball Tournament, both male and female.
The D’Tigress defeated Australia in their opening game of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.
They also defeated Canada 79-70 in between their 54-75 loss to the host France and their 88-74 quarterfinal loss to the United States.
Under Wakama’s leadership, the D’Tigress created history in Paris by being the first team, male or female, from Africa to get to the quarterfinals of an Olympic basketball competition.
