The Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, led a high-profile federal government delegation to Borno State on Friday, signaling the administration’s continued support for the region devastated by severe flooding. The delegation included the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, Mr. Ibrahim Kabir Masari, among others.
This visit follows recent efforts by the federal government to assess and mitigate the damage caused by the floods, including Vice President Kashim Shettima’s earlier trip to Maiduguri, where he conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s message of support and solidarity. The collapse of the Alau Dam had triggered widespread destruction, displacing communities and causing immense material and human loss.
During the visit, HM Edun addressed the Borno State government and its citizens, extending his deepest sympathies to the victims. He acknowledged the tragic loss of lives, the damage to property, and the displacement of thousands of residents. Edun emphasized that the federal government is actively exploring additional financial avenues within the national budget to provide more direct relief and support through the Ministries of Finance and Budget and Economic Planning.
“We are committed to ensuring that financial aid reaches the people and communities most affected by these devastating floods,” said Edun during his speech at the Borno State House.
The presence of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu on the visit was also notable, with Edun highlighting the federal government’s focus on maintaining Borno’s improved security situation. He stressed that President Tinubu’s administration understands the importance of safeguarding the state’s hard-won stability while managing the ongoing flood crisis.
HM Edun expressed his gratitude to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his warm reception and lauded the resilience and determination of the Borno people in the face of adversity. He assured that the federal government will stand with Borno State in both recovery efforts and continued support for security measures.
This visit by the federal delegation underscores President Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to addressing the crisis in Borno State and across Nigeria, as the country continues to face severe climate and security challenges.
