The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has praised the Ijaw nation, describing them as “good people” who should not be associated with negativity.
Wike made this remark during a Thanksgiving Service held in Abalama, Asari-Toru Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State on Saturday. The event provided an opportunity for the former Rivers State Governor to address key political issues while reaffirming his commitment to upholding democratic principles.
Wike Vows Not to Interfere with Rivers State Assembly
Addressing concerns over political tensions in Rivers State, Wike emphasized his stance on allowing the Rivers State House of Assembly to function independently.
“I won’t stop the Assembly from carrying out their constitutional duties,” he stated firmly, reinforcing his respect for democratic institutions.
Criticism of Political Opponents
During his speech, Wike criticized the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo, and other political figures, accusing them of misleading the state governor for personal gain.
He alleged that Danagogo and his brother, Justice Danagogo, conspired to obtain an ex parte order, which the governor reportedly used to present the state budget to only four individuals.
“They will lead you to hellfire,” Wike warned, condemning what he described as unethical political maneuvers.
Ethnic Sentiments and Political Struggles
Wike also denounced attempts to stir ethnic tensions, particularly in response to recent court rulings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He reminded supporters of his past political victories and vowed to continue defending his influence in the state.
“Our effort, our sweat—we cannot be pushed out. All of you suffered, and somebody will just come because they gave him power overnight to tell us to get out. Who told him he can tell us to get out? Will you accept the ‘get out’?” Wike asked the crowd, prompting a strong reaction from attendees.
Determination to Maintain Political Influence
The minister reiterated his commitment to protecting his political structure in Rivers State, asserting that his past successes would continue.
“I have defeated them before, and I’ll continue to defeat them,” he declared, drawing applause from the audience.
Event Attendance and Political Implications
The event attracted prominent community leaders, political stakeholders, and residents, reflecting the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State. As Rivers politics remains a focal point in Nigeria’s political landscape, Wike’s statements further highlight his determination to maintain a stronghold in the state’s affairs.
