The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has suspended the Mandate Secretary for Education, Danlami Hayyo, following the circulation of a directive claiming that all public senior secondary schools in Abuja were to shut down by November 28 due to security concerns.
The controversy began after a memo signed by a director in the Education Secretariat instructed public schools to close on or before Friday, November 28. The directive quickly sparked public concern over an alleged security threat affecting schools in the nation’s capital.
However, in a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, the administration debunked the report, clarifying that no decision was made at any level of the FCTA to order an early school closure. The statement added that the memo did not reflect the official position of the administration.
Wike subsequently approved the suspension of the Education Secretary, while further disciplinary actions are expected for officials involved in issuing the unauthorized directive. The FCTA urged parents, students, and school authorities to disregard the earlier memo, confirming that the official academic calendar remains unchanged.
