Media personality Daddy Freeze has criticized Nigerian music star Wizkid for likening himself to legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, saying the comparison is misplaced if Wizkid cannot openly challenge government authority.
Speaking during a recent discussion, Daddy Freeze argued that Fela’s legacy was built not just on music, but on fearless activism and consistent confrontation of oppressive policies and leaders. He said Fela used his platform to speak truth to power, often at great personal risk.
“Wizkid should not compare himself to Fela if he cannot confront the government,” Daddy Freeze said. “Fela was beaten, jailed, harassed, and still stood his ground. That courage is what made him Fela.”
While acknowledging Wizkid’s global success and influence, Daddy Freeze maintained that musical excellence alone does not qualify an artist to inherit Fela’s activist image.
The comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that Fela’s political boldness sets him apart, while others argue that modern artists face different risks and realities in today’s Nigeria.
