Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) has secured a €117,000 grant from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme to develop a solar-powered aquaponics system that integrates catfish farming with the cultivation of vegetables and maize.

The project, known as AQUACLEC, will establish a local innovation hub in Lagos to test and replicate the system across Nigeria and West Africa, boosting food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Coordinated by Dr. Funmilayo Doherty, the initiative will be implemented in partnership with the University of Lagos, the University of Turku, and the University of Lapland. Yabatech’s Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, said the project aligns with global sustainability goals and showcases the college’s role as an innovation hub.

This comes shortly after Yabatech’s success with the NYESAF initiative, which trained 200 youths in digital and creative skills, further underscoring the institution’s impact on national development.
