Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State appeared at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja today for the hearing of a case involving allegations of misappropriation of ₦110 billion in public funds.

The case, brought forward by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accuses Bello of diverting funds meant for state projects and misusing public resources during his tenure. The charges include money laundering, fraud, and breach of public trust.

Bello, who arrived at the court under heavy security, has denied the allegations, describing them as politically motivated attempts to tarnish his reputation. His legal team has filed preliminary objections, challenging the jurisdiction of the court and the validity of the charges.

The hearing, which lasted several hours, focused on pre-trial motions, with both sides presenting arguments. The presiding judge adjourned the case to a later date for further proceedings.

The development has drawn significant public interest, with calls from civil society groups urging the judiciary to ensure a transparent and speedy trial.

This case is one of the most high-profile corruption cases involving a sitting governor in recent years, highlighting ongoing concerns about accountability in Nigeria’s public sector.
