Zulum Approves Increased Rural Allowances for Health Workers in Borno

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved a substantial rise in rural posting allowances for medical staff serving in underserved areas across the state.
Under the new policy, medical doctors working in designated rural communities will receive a 100 % rural allowance equivalent to their full salaries, while nurses and midwives will get 40 % of their salaries as an allowance.
The announcement was made during a briefing on Tuesday following an inspection tour of projects in northern Borno, including general hospitals and other facilities.
Governor Zulum described the increase as a “game changer” designed to tackle the shortage of health workers in rural hospitals, where many personnel have traditionally preferred better-paid roles with international organisations.
The new allowances take effect from January 1, 2026, and health workers willing to serve in rural areas have been urged to register with the State Hospital Management Board. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
