The story of Zacchaeus Adelabu Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), is a testament to the extraordinary grace of God, resilience, and a determination to redefine success against all odds. Born into a modest agrarian family in Iwo Ate, Oyo State, Adedeji’s rise from humble beginnings to a position of national and global prominence exemplifies how divine providence can shape destinies.

Raised by a cocoa farmer father and a trader-cum-farmer mother, Zacch’s early life was shaped by hard work and simplicity. His father envisioned him as an heir to the family’s cocoa business, but God had other plans. The young boy’s brilliance, evident from an early age, positioned him for far greater accomplishments than anyone in his small community could have imagined.

Adedeji’s academic journey reflects his tenacity and intellectual prowess. After excelling at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, where he earned a distinction in Accountancy, he furthered his education at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. There, he graduated with First Class honors in Management and Accounting, even while grappling with the loss of his father. His outstanding performance set the stage for a stellar career in finance and management.

At Procter & Gamble (P&G), Adedeji’s financial acumen and problem-solving skills saved the company millions, earning him rapid promotions and global recognition. His exceptional contributions led to his deployment to Switzerland to share insights with colleagues at one of the world’s leading business schools.

His transition to public service was catalyzed by a chance meeting with the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi in 2009. Impressed by Adedeji’s brilliance, Ajimobi appointed him Commissioner for Finance in Oyo State at the age of 33. In this role, Adedeji transformed the state’s revenue landscape, increasing Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from N600 million to N2 billion monthly by introducing innovative financial reforms.

Adedeji’s contributions didn’t stop there. As Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, he redefined standards and processes, ensuring the agency delivered on its mandate. His appointment as Special Adviser on Revenue to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a natural progression for a man who had consistently demonstrated excellence and integrity.

Now as the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Adedeji’s impact is undeniable. Under his leadership, the agency surpassed its revenue targets in 2023, prompting the government to set an ambitious benchmark of N19.4 trillion for 2024. His ability to modernize tax administration and streamline processes has positioned FIRS as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic growth.

Despite his towering achievements, Adedeji remains a man of humility and faith. A devout Anglican evangelist, he attributes his success to God’s grace and a commitment to serving others. Known for his down-to-earth personality, he relates effortlessly with people from all walks of life, embodying the principle that leadership is about care and service.
