The Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has formalized a landmark $12.3 million partnership with the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) to boost agricultural mechanisation and strengthen food security in the state.
The agreement, valued at $12,347,071.44, comes through an amended Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties. The funding is jointly provided by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF), and the Kano State Government.
This initiative aims to modernise Kano’s agricultural sector through the procurement and deployment of essential mechanisation tools, including tractors, combine harvesters, sprayers, planters, rice milling machines, onion storage infrastructure, and solar-powered water pumps.
According to project coordinators, the deal marks a significant expansion of KSADP’s mandate, targeting increased efficiency in farming operations, reduced post-harvest losses, and improved rural livelihoods.
As part of the implementation strategy, several mechanisation centres will be established across the state. These centres are expected to ease farmers’ access to modern equipment and alleviate the physical burden of traditional farming methods.
The newly amended MoU extends the project duration from July 1 to December 31, 2025, following five years of previous collaborative success between KSADP and SAA.
Officials say the project reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable food systems and underscores the strategic role of mechanisation in transforming agriculture into a commercially viable sector.
