US–Mexico Border Wall to Be Painted Black to Deter Climbers

The Trump administration has announced plans to paint the entire U.S.–Mexico border wall black. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that this directive, issued by President Trump, aims to make the steel structure too hot to climb by increasing heat absorption in the desert sun. Noem also noted that the black paint would help deter rust .

This initiative is part of the broader “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which allocates $46.5 billion to complete and enhance border infrastructure, including the construction of an additional 700 miles of wall and the installation of advanced security technologies such as cameras and sensors .

While proponents argue that the black paint will serve as a deterrent to illegal crossings, environmental groups have expressed concerns. Critics warn that the increased surface temperature could pose risks to both humans and wildlife, potentially causing burns and disrupting local ecosystems .

The cost of painting the border wall black is estimated at $1.2 million per mile, totaling approximately $500 million for the entire length .

This move marks a continuation of the Trump administration’s efforts to reinforce border security, which began with the construction of the wall during Trump’s first term and are being expanded in his second term.()
