Federal prosecutors have urged a U.S. court to reject Sean “Diddy” Combs’ request for a new trial, arguing that there is “more than a sufficient basis” to uphold his conviction. In a filing submitted overnight, prosecutors maintained that the evidence presented during trial overwhelmingly supported the jury’s decision.
Combs, who was convicted earlier this year on federal charges, has sought a retrial on grounds that his legal team claims errors were made in the handling of his case. His lawyers have argued that certain testimony and evidence unfairly influenced the jury.
The government’s response sets the stage for a new legal battle over whether the music mogul will get another chance to contest the charges. The judge overseeing the case has yet to issue a ruling on Combs’ motion.
