President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a series of water, sanitation, irrigation, and hydropower projects aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG-6), which seeks universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030. The announcement was made by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, during the opening of the 8th International Water Conference in Makurdi, Benue State.
Under the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, these initiatives include the construction of major dams, expansion of irrigation schemes, and enhancement of water supply and sanitation infrastructure across the country. The projects are designed to boost food production, increase water availability, and support sustainable development in line with Nigeria’s long-term national goals.
Key projects highlighted include the ongoing 460 MW Katsina-Ala Dam and the 186 MW Bawarku Dam on the Benue River. Additionally, the government is advancing the concessioning of the Datsin Hausa Dam in Adamawa and the Itisi Dam in Kaduna to enhance water storage and hydropower generation capacities nationwide.
Minister Utsev praised President Tinubu for his unwavering support and commended Nigerian engineers and stakeholders for their commitment to transforming the nation’s water and sanitation sectors. The Federal Government reaffirmed its dedication to achieving SDG-6 and ensuring sustainable access to clean water and sanitation for all Nigerians.
