The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accelerated work on the Ajaokuta Kaduna Kano Gas Pipeline, one of Nigeria’s most ambitious energy projects, now reported to be 83 percent completed. The 2.8 billion dollar 614 kilometre pipeline, designed to transport natural gas from Ajaokuta through Abuja and Kaduna to Kano, is central to the Decade of Gas initiative aimed at boosting power generation, driving industrialisation, and reducing gas flaring.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has made the project a top priority by ensuring steady funding and directing the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners to fast track delivery. A major milestone was achieved in mid 2025 with the completion of the River Niger crossing, a technically demanding phase that had stalled progress for years. Additional contractors have also been mobilised to speed up work on the remaining sections.

Analysts say the AKK pipeline, once completed, will transform energy supply in northern Nigeria, powering industries in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano while creating jobs and new economic opportunities. It is also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s environmental commitments by cutting gas flaring in the Niger Delta. Stakeholders view the project as proof of President Tinubu’s determination to deliver critical infrastructure under his Renewed Hope agenda.
