Spirit Airlines Cuts 40 Routes, Brings in Ex Amazon Executive to Overhaul Network

Spirit Airlines announced it will suspend 40 routes starting in November as the ultra low cost carrier pushes ahead with an aggressive restructuring plan. The move comes amid mounting financial struggles, including a recent bankruptcy filing, its second in just a few years, and widespread cost cutting measures such as furloughing nearly a third of its flight attendants.

Many of the canceled routes are seasonal or operated only on select days, but the cuts highlight Spirit’s shift toward consolidating around its most profitable markets. Analysts say the strategy is designed to stabilize operations and improve efficiency at a time when the carrier faces rising costs and intense competition from both budget and full service airlines.

In a bid to sharpen its route strategy, Spirit has hired Andrea Lusso, a former Amazon executive, as Vice President of Network Planning. Lusso is expected to apply his expertise in logistics and network optimization to streamline Spirit’s flight map and restore financial health.

The airline’s retrenchment marks one of its most significant shakeups in recent years, as Spirit attempts to navigate bankruptcy, protect jobs where possible, and remain competitive in the crowded U.S. airline market.
