The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested more than 250 commercial taxi drivers for overloading their vehicles.

The operation, which began on October 2, lasted two days and focused on taxis carrying more passengers than permitted, particularly those squeezing two passengers into the front seat.

FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, explained that the arrests followed repeated warnings and sensitisation campaigns aimed at commercial drivers and transport unions. Despite these efforts, he noted that the practice of overloading remained widespread, posing serious dangers to road users.

Theman highlighted the risks, stressing that overloading prevents proper use of seatbelts, weakens vehicle suspension and tyres, and reduces a driver’s ability to maintain control in emergencies.

To further curb the violations, the FRSC announced that beginning October 6, mobile magistrate courts will be deployed to prosecute offenders immediately. The corps also warned drivers operating vehicles below minimum safety standards to upgrade their fleets or face impoundment.

The crackdown is part of the FRSC’s renewed push to enforce road safety regulations and reduce accidents caused by negligence and non-compliance.
