England captain Harry Kane is a doubt for Thursday’s friendly against Wales after the Bayern Munich striker missed training on Wednesday due to an ankle problem.
Kane joined up with the national team despite picking up the knock during Bayern’s victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. Speaking after the game, the 32-year-old said: “I am recovering at the moment — I took a knock. A few days and I should be fine, so no problem for the national team. I will be there on Monday.”
However, the England record scorer, with 74 goals, sat out Wednesday’s session alongside uncapped Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah. According to the Football Association, both players were “following their own respective routines indoors,” while the remaining 22 squad members trained at St George’s Park.
Kane, who scored against Frankfurt to make it 18 goals in just 10 games this season, could be replaced by Ollie Watkins, Marcus Rashford, Jarrod Bowen, or Anthony Gordon if he fails to recover in time.
Gareth Southgate’s side will host Wales at a sold-out Wembley before shifting focus to Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier in Latvia.
England currently top Group K, seven points clear of second-placed Albania, having won all five of their qualifying matches as they edge closer to securing a spot at next year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
