Nigeria has activated its End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) policy to reduce the importation of unsafe and ageing vehicles into the country. The initiative, led by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), aims to improve road safety, protect the environment, and support the growth of the local automotive industry.
Full implementation of the policy is expected to begin in 2026, following a phased rollout that will allow stakeholders to adjust to stricter safety and quality standards. Vehicles that fail to meet the new requirements will be barred from importation, while older, unroadworthy vehicles will gradually be phased out.
The policy also introduces a vehicle recycling framework, including a mandatory recycling fee, to ensure environmentally responsible disposal of vehicles and create new jobs within the recycling and auto-parts sectors.
Government officials say the ELV policy will reduce Nigeria’s dependence on used vehicle imports and encourage local assembly, while stakeholders have called for careful implementation to avoid negative impacts on affordability. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
