Nigeria began their AFCON campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in a tense Group clash played on December 23, 2025. The Super Eagles took the lead in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi powered home a header from an Alex Iwobi assist, capping a dominant first-half display that ended 1–0 in Nigeria’s favour.

The second half, however, told a different story as Tanzania struck back early through C. M’Mombwa in the 50th minute, briefly stunning the Nigerian side. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead after another assist from Iwobi, settling nerves and shifting momentum back in the Super Eagles’ favour as tactical substitutions followed on both sides.

Despite late pressure from the Taifa Stars and multiple changes to freshen up both teams, Nigeria held firm to secure all three points in their opening fixture. With Lookman stepping up and questions still lingering over consistency, can the Super Eagles build on this win and mount a serious AFCON title challenge? Visit www.jocomms.com for more news
