World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, narrowly escaped death on Monday following a serious road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in the Makun area of Ogun State.
The crash reportedly occurred at about 11:00 a.m. near Danco Filling Station, Makun, inward the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound section of the highway. Witnesses said Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN when the vehicle rammed into a stationary truck under circumstances that are still unclear.
The Lexus SUV was said to be moving as part of a two-vehicle convoy, with a Pajero SUV conveying Joshua’s security personnel trailing behind. At the time of the accident, four occupants were reportedly inside the Lexus, with the boxer seated at the rear behind the driver.
An eyewitness disclosed that while Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries, two other occupants of the vehicle died instantly as a result of the impact. Emergency efforts by bystanders began immediately before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene.
“It was a very serious crash. Joshua was seated behind the driver with another passenger beside him, while one person was next to the driver. His security team was in the vehicle behind. We quickly tried to rescue those inside and stopped passing vehicles for assistance before FRSC officials arrived,” the eyewitness recounted.
Personnel of the FRSC later took control of the scene, managing traffic and evacuating the victims.
The incident was confirmed by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, alongside the FRSC spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi. Both officials stated that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and that further updates will be provided.
