Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to recent comments made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, describing the remarks as a reflection of “mental and emotional struggles” rather than constructive political criticism.

Atiku, in a statement, said he had taken note of Lawal’s attack on his person and found the comments unnecessary and unbecoming of a former public office holder.

He said rather than contribute to national discourse or issue-based criticism, Lawal had chosen to engage in personal attacks, which he said do not add value to Nigeria’s political conversation.

The former Vice President added that such remarks should be ignored by well-meaning Nigerians, stressing the need for political actors to focus on ideas that promote national unity and development.

Atiku maintained that he remains committed to contributing to the strengthening of democracy and would not be distracted by what he described as “unguided statements” from political opponents.

He further urged supporters and members of the public to remain focused on issues of governance and avoid being drawn into personal exchanges.
