During a summit in Kazan, Russia, the BRICS group of emerging economies has issued a strong call for enhanced representation of the Global South in international decision-making processes. The joint statement emphasized the need for the active and meaningful participation of emerging economies and developing nations, particularly from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
The leaders of BRICS—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—stressed that giving a greater voice to these regions is essential for creating a more equitable global governance structure. “We call for more active and meaningful participation of states with emerging economies, the developing and the least developed countries,” the statement read.
In addition to advocating for increased representation, BRICS leaders pledged to enhance cooperation on climate change initiatives. They committed to collaborating on solutions and technologies aimed at reducing and capturing greenhouse gas emissions. However, they condemned “unilateral” climate measures imposed on their countries, arguing that such actions can undermine their economic development.
The BRICS summit underscored the group’s commitment to addressing global challenges while ensuring that the voices of developing nations are heard and considered in shaping international policies. The call for greater involvement from the Global South reflects a growing recognition of the need for inclusivity in global governance as the world faces pressing issues like climate change and economic inequality.
