The House of Representatives has decided to investigate Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, the representative for Abia North/Abia South federal constituency, following an incident in which he assaulted a cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja.
This decision came after House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonbvere introduced a motion on a “Matter of Privilege” during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Hon. Ihonbvere stated that the lawmaker’s violent behavior has negatively impacted the reputation of all members of the 10th Assembly. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive collective image, saying, “The way we conduct ourselves influences how others perceive us.”
He continued, “We are committed to building this institution into one that the public can be proud of, and we will not tolerate any behavior that undermines our integrity. This incident affects not just one individual, but tarnishes the image of the entire House.”
He noted that the House has procedures in place to address misconduct, referencing Order 5(e) that outlines the protocol for handling such issues. “This situation is serious; it challenges our collective integrity and public trust.”
When Ikwechegh attempted to speak on the motion, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu reminded him that matters of privilege are not open to debate. He advised Ikwechegh to present his case to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
Ikwechegh had previously issued an “unreserved” apology to the Assembly, the Inspector General of Police, and the cab driver. He acknowledged his accountability, stating, “While I am human and not infallible, I am committed to addressing this matter responsibly.” He also expressed regret for any offense caused to the Inspector General and reaffirmed his respect for the Nigerian Police Force.
