The federal government has encouraged Nigerians to explore the recycling industry as a viable economic opportunity. Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), issued the call in Abuja during the launch of Recycling in Nigeria, a book authored by Hon. Terseer Ugbor, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Chris Tarka, Akume highlighted the potential of the recycling industry, urging Nigerians to emulate developed nations that have successfully turned waste management into profitable ventures. “The recycling of waste from dunghills appears to be a big business that has long been overlooked,” Akume noted, praising Ugbor for raising awareness about the economic benefits of recycling.

Akume pointed out that many developed countries have implemented waste separation practices, with households and businesses using separate bins for recyclable items such as newspapers, glass, and plastics. He added that these materials are then collected and recycled, contributing to a sustainable environment and creating economic value.

Hon. Ugbor, who represents the Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency in Benue, emphasized the need to educate young Nigerians about waste-to-wealth initiatives. He highlighted recycling as a profitable industry that includes sectors like plastics, tires, e-waste, metals, paper, and waste oil.

“It is high time Nigerians knew more about recycling, waste management, and waste-to-wealth,” Ugbor stated, expressing disappointment that many Nigerians are not taking advantage of these opportunities.

The federal government’s encouragement of recycling aligns with efforts to address environmental challenges and boost economic diversification. Both Akume and Ugbor hope the initiative will inspire Nigerian entrepreneurs, particularly the youth, to consider recycling as a promising business avenue.
