Akpabio Declares Okpebholo’s Senate Seat Vacant, Requests INEC to Hold Election

On Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant. This decision follows Okpebholo’s election as Governor of Edo State, leading to his departure from the 10th Senate.

Akpabio further directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold elections promptly to fill the vacant seat, ensuring continued representation for the people of Edo Central in the Senate.

The declaration was made after a special valedictory session organized by the Senate in honor of Senator Okpebholo. Akpabio took the opportunity to praise Okpebholo’s legacy of good work and urged him to continue his exemplary service as Governor of Edo State.

In his remarks, Akpabio expressed his emotions, recalling how his time in the Senate since June 2023 had been unforgettable. He shared how, in the short span of a year, he left the Senate to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions, eventually becoming the Governor of Edo State. Akpabio acknowledged the invaluable support, advice, and prayers of his colleagues during his campaign.

He offered special thanks to Senate President Akpabio for his encouragement, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin for his wise political counsel, and Senate Majority Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, whom he described as a brother. Akpabio also expressed gratitude to other principal officers and senators of the 10th Senate for their warm relationships and unwavering support.

Reflecting on his legislative work, Akpabio emphasized how his Senate experience had fueled his passion for governance, particularly in infrastructure development, security, education, and health, which are now priorities in his role as Governor. He also thanked close friends within the Senate, including Senators Kaka Shehu Lawan, Babangida Husseini Uba, and Abdulaziz Yari, among others
