Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has reaffirmed that the successful conduct of the Osun State governorship election remains the commission’s immediate priority as it also prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan stated this on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving a delegation of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) from Plateau State, led by Pius Akubo (SAN), who paid him a congratulatory visit following his appointment as INEC chairman.

The delegation described Amupitan’s appointment as a landmark for the North-Central region and Nigeria’s democratic development. Akubo, on behalf of the group, presented a congratulatory card and prayed for wisdom and divine guidance for the INEC chairman.

Responding, Amupitan thanked the delegation for the visit, describing the Plateau SANs as family and recalling his long-standing professional relationship with the state’s legal community. He also paid tribute to deceased senior advocates from Plateau State, describing their deaths as a significant loss to the legal profession.

The INEC chairman called on Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to continue supporting and praying for the commission as it carries out its constitutional mandate. He also commended the commission’s National Commissioners, Secretary, directors and technical aides for their dedication, describing them as the “generals” behind INEC’s recent achievements.

He reiterated that while the commission remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process, its immediate focus is the successful conduct of the Osun State governorship election and preparations for future nationwide electoral activities, including the 2027 general elections.
