The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that corps members across Nigeria will soon receive ₦77,000 as their monthly allowance, reflecting the government’s recent adjustment to the national minimum wage.

Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director General of the NYSC, made this announcement on Tuesday in Abuja, according to a statement issued by the NYSC spokesperson, Caroline Embu. General Ahmed emphasized his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of corps members, assuring that arrangements for the payment of the new allowance have been finalized.

The increase follows the review of Nigeria’s minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in July 2024. The minimum wage adjustment was the result of months of negotiations among government authorities, labor unions, and the private sector.

This latest increment marks another milestone for the NYSC, which previously raised corps members’ monthly allowances from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000 in 2020 after the introduction of the ₦30,000 minimum wage.

The new allowance structure underscores the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian youths serving under the NYSC scheme, which has long been recognized as a critical program for national development and unity.

Corps members across the country have welcomed the news, viewing it as a positive step toward addressing the economic challenges they face during their service year. The NYSC management assured members of a seamless implementation of the new policy.
