Oando PLC has announced the appointment of Mr. Ademola Akinrele (SAN) as the new Chairman of its Board of Directors, effective immediately following the conclusion of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 17, 2024. This development comes in the wake of the resignation of Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, who stepped down after serving with distinction for over 18 years, including 12 years as Board Chairman.
In a statement, Oando PLC praised Oba Gbadebo’s exemplary leadership, which was instrumental in guiding the company through major milestones and challenges.
“Oba Gbadebo served with unparalleled distinction for over 18 years on the Board, including 12 years as Chairman. His steady hand and unwavering commitment were pivotal in steering the company through challenges while ensuring growth and resilience,” the statement read.
The Board expressed deep appreciation for his contributions, noting that his legacy would remain integral to the company’s history.
Following Oba Gbadebo’s resignation, Oando PLC appointed Mr. Ademola Akinrele to lead the company into its next phase. Akinrele, a seasoned legal professional and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, previously served as a non-executive director on the Board and chaired its Governance & Nominations Committee.
With an LL.B. (Hons.) from University College, London, and an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge, Akinrele brings a wealth of experience and expertise. His past roles include serving on the boards of Agip Plc and Danos & Curole Marine Contractors.

In addition to Akinrele’s appointment, Oando PLC also announced the onboarding of Mr. Cosmas Iwueze as an independent non-executive director. A petroleum engineer with over three decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, Iwueze is expected to bring invaluable insights and expertise to the Board.
