A small private plane crashed in northeast Philadelphia on Friday, sparking fires in a densely populated neighborhood, officials confirmed.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that six people were aboard the Learjet aircraft, but there has been no confirmation of casualties or survivors. The aircraft, which had taken off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri when it went down around 2330 GMT.
Authorities, including the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), have launched an investigation into the crash.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated on X, “We are offering all resources as emergency services respond to the small private plane crash in Northeast Philly. We’ll continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.”
Philadelphia’s Office of Emergency Management described the crash as a “major incident,” closing roads around Roosevelt Mall and urging residents to avoid the area.
The incident comes just days after a passenger jet and military helicopter collided near Washington’s Reagan National Airport, resulting in the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster in nearly 25 years.
