A tragic shooting unfolded Monday evening in Manhattan’s Park Avenue, leaving four people dead and sending shockwaves through the city. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, stormed an office building, killing three victims and injuring another before taking his own life. Among the victims was New York City police officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working as a security guard at the time of the attack.

The attack began in the lobby of the building, which houses the National Football League (NFL), financial firms like KPMG and Blackstone, and other major offices. Police say Tamura opened fire with an assault-style rifle, then proceeded to the 33rd floor, where he killed another victim. Surveillance footage shows the shooter entering the building with a rifle, calmly passing a woman in the elevator lobby, and continuing his spree before ultimately taking his life.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura appeared to act alone and was known to have mental health issues. Authorities are still investigating his motives for the shooting, which left New York City on edge. Police responded swiftly, evacuating nearby buildings and halting parts of Midtown Manhattan.

Officer Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two, was celebrated as a “hero” by local officials. He had been with the NYPD for three and a half years and was praised for his bravery in the line of duty. Islam’s family, who were expecting a third child, is now left grieving the loss of a beloved husband and father.

The gunman had reportedly driven across the country from Las Vegas. In his vehicle, police found multiple magazines and a revolver, all legally registered in Nevada. The tragic event occurred just before 6:30 p.m. ET, with gunfire echoing through the building as employees scrambled for safety, barricading themselves in offices.

As the investigation unfolds, questions about gun laws and mental health in America continue to dominate discussions. The incident also serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat of gun violence in the United States, particularly in urban centers like New York City.
