President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a major healthcare initiative aimed at expanding access to cancer treatment across Nigeria. Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), is now offering a ₦400,000 subsidy to eligible cancer patients for radiotherapy services.

This move follows the commissioning of three advanced oncology centres in Katsina, Nsukka, and Benin, each equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and radiotherapy facilities. These centres will also serve as training grounds for over 500 oncology professionals within the next three years.

As part of the broader strategy to combat cancer and strengthen healthcare infrastructure, the Federal Ministry of Health has disclosed plans to establish seven additional oncology centres by 2026. Locations being considered include Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, and Yola, among others.

The initiative not only offers immediate financial relief to patients but also aligns with President Tinubu’s long-term commitment to ending medical tourism and ensuring Nigeria becomes self-reliant in specialized healthcare delivery. It represents a clear step toward achieving medical industrialisation and improving the survival rates for cancer patients through early diagnosis and treatment.
