Fenerbahce president Ali Koç has shed light on the dismissal of José Mourinho, describing the split as a “bitter parting” but insisting the Portuguese coach’s defensive style was no longer acceptable. Mourinho was relieved of his duties on August 29 after just over a year in charge, despite recording 37 wins in 62 games. The decision came in the aftermath of a Champions League play-off defeat to Benfica, who advanced with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory.
Speaking to Turkish outlet Hurriyet, Koç admitted the decision was difficult given Mourinho’s stature and their strong personal relationship. “Our chemistry was perfect, and his accomplishments are evident. Just being able to bring him here was a great achievement. Above all, it was difficult to part with someone I was friends with,” Koç said. However, he stressed that Fenerbahce must embody a more dominant footballing identity, noting that the club’s “genetic code” demanded attacking football capable of delivering 99 goals and 99 points.
Koç emphasized that it wasn’t elimination by Benfica itself that led to Mourinho’s sacking, but the manner of the exit. “This kind of football works in Europe, but in Turkey, we have to crush them in most matches. We’re struggling to get ahead after falling behind in every match,” he explained. Concluding, Koç stated the club believed its squad was capable of producing more assertive football, making Mourinho’s departure inevitable despite the “bitter” nature of the decision.
