Team Brazil capped off a remarkable weekend in Nigeria with a thrilling victory at the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, claiming their first-ever win in the all-electric powerboat series and making history as champions of the maiden African race, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Starting from pole position after a dominant qualifying session on Saturday, Team Brazil carried their momentum into Sunday’s final, where Timmy Hansen delivered a flawless performance on the Lagos waters. The team had already set the fastest times in both practice and qualifying before sealing a perfect weekend with victory in the final race.

They beat Team Blue Rising, owned by Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli, who finished second, while Team Drogba Global Africa — co-owned by Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba and Gabrielle Lemaire — claimed third place.

The win earned Team Brazil 38 points, taking their total to 89, though they remain seventh in the overall standings ahead of next month’s season finale in Miami.

“We came to Lagos and had a fantastic time,” Hansen told PUNCH Sports Extra. “It’s important in this race format to secure the best starting lane, and we had that advantage. Thanks to the team, I had a brilliant start — it was smooth sailing all the way.”

There was no podium finish for Team Rafa or Team Brady, the two frontrunners in the championship battle. However, Team Brady maintained their lead despite finishing fourth in Lagos, collecting 19 points to move up to 154 overall.

They remain just three points ahead of Team Rafa, owned by tennis great Rafael Nadal, whose duo Cris Lazarraga and Tom Chiappe placed fifth to reach 151 points for the season. Kohli’s Team Blue Rising sit third with 145 points.

The E1 Series, the world’s first all-electric powerboat championship, launched last year in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with Lagos making history as the first African city to host the event. The Lagos GP served as the penultimate round of the season, setting the stage for a dramatic finale in Miami.

Speaking after the event, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the championship as a landmark moment for the city and the continent.

“Hosting the E1 Series is not just about sports — it’s about innovation, environmental responsibility, and showcasing Lagos as a hub for future-focused development,” Sanwo-Olu said.
