The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a safety advisory to motorists plying the Onitsha–Owerri Expressway, following the development of a massive gully erosion that has severely damaged one lane of the road.
According to the FRSC, the erosion, located around the Ozubulu section of the expressway in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, has worsened in recent days due to persistent heavy rainfall. The situation has resulted in the collapse of a significant portion of the roadway, posing serious risks to road users.
Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State, Adeoye Irelewuyi, confirmed that the agency, in collaboration with the Tamaic Construction Company, the Ekwusigo LGA Chairman, and officials from the Federal Ministry of Works, has mobilized to the site to manage traffic and ensure motorists’ safety.
He explained that barricades and warning signs have been installed around the affected area, while traffic is being diverted to prevent accidents. The FRSC further urged drivers to exercise caution, obey traffic directives, and reduce speed when approaching the damaged section of the highway.
“The Corps is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure prompt intervention and prevent further road degradation,” Irelewuyi stated.
Meanwhile, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling erosion and flooding challenges across Anambra State. He assured residents that the government is taking urgent measures to stabilize the affected portions of the Onitsha–Owerri road and other erosion-prone areas.
The FRSC has advised all motorists to remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season, and to report any dangerous road conditions to the nearest FRSC command for swift action.
