Tinubu Vows to End Nigeria’s $1.5bn Milk Import Bill

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says Nigeria must end its $1.5 billion annual milk import bill, describing it as unsustainable for the economy.

He said the country has enough resources to produce milk locally and create jobs through a revitalised livestock industry.

To drive the plan, the government has empowered the Ministry of Livestock Development, created in July 2024, to lead reforms aimed at boosting domestic production.

The initiative includes importing high-yield dairy cattle, developing pasture systems, expanding cold-chain logistics, and improving access to finance and training for farmers.

Nigeria currently produces only about 35% of its milk demand, with average yields of 1 litre per cow daily, far below the global average.

Tinubu said the government’s target is to double milk output within five years, ensuring food security and reducing import dependence.

“We cannot keep spending billions on what we can produce,” the President said. “Nigeria must achieve self-sufficiency in milk production.” visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
