The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported a billing efficiency of 86.43% for electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in September 2025, marking an improvement over the previous month.

According to NERC’s latest Commercial Performance Factsheet, DisCos received energy valued at ₦279.45 billion, of which ₦241.54 billion was successfully billed to customers. Out of this amount, ₦196.26 billion was collected, representing a collection efficiency of 81.25%, up by 1.18% from August. The overall revenue recovery efficiency, which measures actual cash collected per kilowatt-hour billed, stood at 83.45%, despite an approved average tariff of ₦116.34/kWh and an actual average collection of ₦97.09/kWh.

NERC attributed the improvement to better metering penetration, enhanced energy accounting, and more rigorous billing-verification processes among the top-performing DisCos. The regulator emphasized that higher billing and collection efficiency is critical to ensuring liquidity in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), supporting operations, maintenance, and investment.

Performance, however, remains uneven across the sector. Companies such as Eko DisCo, Ikeja DisCo, and Abuja DisCo were among the top performers, while Jos DisCo, Kaduna DisCo, and Yola DisCo continue to face challenges in metering, operational efficiency, and revenue recovery.

NERC’s report underscores the ongoing need for investments in metering infrastructure and operational improvements to further enhance the financial health of DisCos and the overall electricity supply chain in Nigeria. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
