A police inspector attached to the Ekiadolor Area Command was shot dead on Friday during a routine stop-and-search operation in Benin, the Edo State capital. CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, describing the attack as a brazen assault on law enforcement officers performing their lawful duties.

According to Yamu, the incident occurred around noon when an unregistered, heavily-tinted black Lexus SUV approached a checkpoint and refused to stop despite being flagged down. Officers, alarmed by the vehicle’s suspicious behaviour, attempted further checks, but one of the occupants suddenly opened fire at close range, killing the inspector instantly before speeding away from the scene.

In response, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered a full-scale investigation and an intensive manhunt to track down the assailants. Will this bold attack push security agencies to tighten operations and fast-track the capture of the perpetrators? Visit www.jocomms.com for more news
