Court Orders INEC to Recognise Nenadi Usman-Led Labour Party Caretaker Committee

The Federal High Court in Abuja has upheld the Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the legitimate leadership of the Labour Party, effectively removing Julius Abure as national chairman.

The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately recognise the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee as the authentic leadership of the party.

Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, Justice Peter Lifu relied on the Supreme Court’s ruling of April 4, 2025, which held that Julius Abure’s tenure as national chairman of the Labour Party had expired.

The court affirmed that, in line with the apex court’s decision, Abure no longer possessed the legal authority to continue occupying the position, thereby validating the establishment of the caretaker committee pending the conduct of a properly constituted national convention.

The judgment is expected to have significant implications for the internal leadership structure of the Labour Party and its engagement with electoral authorities ahead of future elections.
