President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦68 billion in operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), a move aimed at sustaining electricity supply in Borno State.
Governor Babagana Zulum commended the President for the swift intervention, describing the approval as timely and impactful for the state’s development.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the funding will be disbursed as a monthly intervention of ₦2 billion from March 2026 to December 2028. The support is intended to bridge the funding gap in the operations of the power plant.
The Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant was initiated in 2021 as a presidential intervention to address prolonged power outages in the state following the destruction of key electricity infrastructure by insurgents. The plant, commissioned the same year, was later upgraded to a 50-megawatt capacity in December 2023.
Governor Zulum noted that the intervention has already contributed to reviving economic activities, improving livelihoods, and strengthening ongoing efforts to address security challenges in the state.
