The Presidency has distanced itself from Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, describing him as an impostor who falsely presented himself as Director-General of a non-existent Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council and Presidential Economic Advisory Council.
In a statement issued by the State House, the Presidency said concerns about the alleged agency first emerged after complaints from the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), which observed that another organisation appeared to be operating as a government body without authorization.
According to the statement, the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President petitioned security agencies in October 2025, requesting an investigation into individuals allegedly forging official appointment letters and presenting themselves as government appointees.
The Presidency said the purported agency, headed by Adeyemi, had allegedly conducted meetings with foreign diplomats and Nigerian officials, while also seeking official diplomatic support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had separately raised concerns over Adeyemi’s activities and sought clarification from relevant government authorities regarding the status of the organisation.
Following investigations, security agencies reportedly established that the agency did not exist and that documents used to support its operations, including appointment letters and other official correspondence, were forged.
The statement disclosed that Adeyemi was arrested in Abuja in October 2025, after which law enforcement agencies searched his office and residence, recovering documents and other materials linked to the alleged operation.
Investigators also reportedly uncovered multiple bank accounts connected to entities allegedly created by Adeyemi and found that he had falsely represented himself as a government official.
The Presidency stated that police investigations concluded that Adeyemi’s actions constituted offences including forgery, impersonation, and obtaining by false pretence.
According to the statement, criminal charges were subsequently filed against Adeyemi and two other individuals at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Presidency said recent claims by Adeyemi that he was appointed by the Chief of Staff to the President contradicted statements he previously made to investigators and reiterated that neither the individual nor the purported agency has any relationship with the Federal Government.
It urged members of the public and political actors to await the outcome of the ongoing court proceedings, maintaining that the matter is currently before the courts.
