The United States has pledged to keep a close watch on Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, reaffirming its support for a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process in the country.
The assurance was given by U.S. Congressman Riley Moore, who said the administration of President Donald Trump remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that elections in Nigeria reflect the will of the people.
Moore described Nigeria as a strategic partner and one of Africa’s most influential democracies, noting that the outcome and credibility of its elections have significant implications for regional peace, economic growth, and democratic governance across the continent.
He called on political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organisations, and voters to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability throughout the electoral process.
According to him, the United States will continue to engage with Nigeria and support initiatives that promote credible elections, democratic governance, and the rule of law ahead of the 2027 polls.
His remarks come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the next general election, with major political actors positioning themselves for the contest.
The period has also renewed conversations on electoral reforms, election security, and the need to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The United States has long partnered with Nigeria in supporting democratic governance through election observation missions, technical assistance, and capacity-building programmes, reaffirming its commitment to the country’s democratic development. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
